I’m thinking of selling my WRX. It’s really fun but I don’t love the boy racer aspect ... I’d like to get something a little more refined. Which got me browsing used Porsches on t he internet.
Requirements are: manual, non boring color, hard top cause it’s Oregon, and equal or more power to my 260hp subie.
Does anyone want to weigh in on performance and daily drivability of the 986 Cay man S, and the 911s of the same vintage? TBH I like both the look and the price of the Cay man better, and within my budget of about 30k, seems much easier to find a good one.

Was the awd needed for winter driving your WRX? If not, a Cayman will be fine. Just remember a Porsche will cost substantially more for parts, service and most likely insurance too. As always, by the best example within your budget, and get the dealer service history and a PPI from a Porsche certified technician.

No actually my wife has an suv for skiing and when it’s too snowy I just work from home. Should be good!

987 cough cough lol but I love that generation Cayman. Certainly get a good PPI, IMS is something to ask about and possibly plan for but I don’t remember which years specifically so do your research. Otherwise, can you wrench? If so lots of things are pretty easy and you’ll save a ton of money that way. They’re pretty reliable so it’s really not THAT much more expensive than most modern cars to maintain.
I like the looks and steering of the 987 a lot. The trunk and f runk of my 981 is more than enough room for 99% of what I carry. I daily drive mine in RI, autocross, track, road trips. I think for the price range I was looking and what I wanted/needed out of a car, there is no fucking way I could do better.
Watch out for the headliner to fall down, but it's not that expensive to get it fixed I think. Oh and don't test drive it if you're not ready to buy it lol

Haha good to know about the test drive! Yeah, I can def wrench so not afraid of maintaining a car myself. Even have my own engine crane and load leveler...just in case!

Well I don’t think an engine crane helps with a mid-engine car lol but my quickjack is the best thing I’ve bought. I’ve had my 2 cars and 4 cars of my friends on it to do tons of work.
But yeah if you get a good inspection and then do your own fluid changes, brakes, maybe even spark plugs... well that's pretty much all of the maintenance they expect routinely. I think even changing the belt is simple after you spend all the time to access it lol either way, it'll save you tons of money and there's no good reason to expect a Porsche is just going to rack up the repair bill like an Alfa.
